A school scarf is a uniform that nobody resents wearing: the stripe says the house, the college, the society — and it says it identically on a first-year and on an alumnus who graduated twenty years ago.

That continuity is the product. The stripe sequence, widths and colours are held on file as the institution’s pattern, and every run — this September or in ten Septembers — is woven to it. We change the pattern only when the institution does, on purpose, in writing.

Societies without a pattern get one designed properly: colours that read at distance, stripes that survive being wrapped twice, and a wearable width — because a scarf that stays in the drawer says nothing at all.
